Aura32

How it works

What happens when you run a Windows program with Aura32.

Three steps

  1. You start the program

The same .exe you would run on Windows, unchanged. Aura32 reads it first and checks it has everything the program needs.

  2. Aura32 plays Windows

When the program asks Windows for a window, a file or a sound, Aura32 answers exactly as Windows would, with its own versions of Windows’ parts.

  3. Linux does the work

Windows appear on your desktop, 3D runs on your graphics card, sound plays through your speakers, files land on your disks. The program itself runs directly on your CPU.

What it uses on your system

Aura32 brings its own Windows, but the real work is done by what your Linux system already has.

  • Windows and dialogsyour desktop, through SDL2
  • 3D graphicsyour graphics driver (Vulkan), and DXVK for Direct3D
  • Web pages inside an appWebKitGTK
  • GPU computingNVIDIA’s driver and CUDA
  • Soundyour sound server: PipeWire, PulseAudio or ALSA
  • Your documents and disksyour own folders, and a drive letter for each disk
Anything missing just switches that part off: without SDL2, for example, programs still run, with no window on screen.

What that means for you

Full speed

No emulator and no virtual machine in between: the program runs on your CPU, as it would on Windows.

Your desktop, your files

Apps draw at your screen’s real scale and open your own Documents, Desktop and disks.

Not a sandbox

Programs run as you and can reach all your files, as they could on Windows. Run the programs you trust.
